How It Works
Three simple steps to find a microwave that fits your space.
Measure Your Space
Use a tape measure to find:
- Width: The interior width of your cabinet or countertop space
- Height: Clearance from the shelf (or countertop) to the next shelf or ceiling
- Depth: Your cabinet or counter depth, front to back
Tip: We accept fractional inches (e.g., 18 5/8") so you can be precise.
We Calculate Required Clearances
Every microwave manufacturer publishes clearance requirements—the minimum breathing room a unit needs around it for safe operation:
- Top: Usually 3"–6" above the unit
- Sides: Usually 3" on each side (for air circulation)
- Back: Usually 1"–2" for exhaust venting
Why? Microwave heating generates air that needs to escape. Without proper clearance, heat builds up and can damage the unit or void the warranty.
Get Your Fit Score
For each model, we:
- Take the model's physical dimensions
- Add its required clearances
- Compare against your available space
- Calculate a Fit Score (0–100)
Fit Score Meaning:
- 90–100: Excellent fit with plenty of headroom
- 70–89: Good fit with comfortable clearance
- 50–69: Tight fit but safe installation possible
- Below 50: Will not fit safely
Only models with a fit score of 50+ are shown when you enter your space.
Why Data Quality Matters
Our database includes two types of models:
✓ Verified Dimensions
Dimensions checked against actual retail listings (Best Buy, Amazon). You can trust these for fit calculations.
⚠ Approximate Dimensions
Sourced from catalogs or older databases. Useful for browsing, but verify before buying.
Common Questions
Can I trust the fit calculations?
Yes—we use official manufacturer clearance specs from product manuals. However, always verify measurements before purchasing, especially with older or third-party-listed models.
What if my space is irregular or angled?
Enter the smallest dimensions. Our tool is conservative—if the fit is tight on paper, it'll be tight in reality.
Do I really need 3" of clearance on the sides?
Yes. Microwaves need air circulation around the unit to dissipate heat. Without it, the thermal cutoff will trigger frequently, reducing lifespan and potentially voiding warranty.
What about over-the-range (OTR) microwaves?
OTR models have different clearance rules (usually smaller because they're vented directly to the exterior). Enter your cooktop opening width and the height from cooktop to cabinet above.
