Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about MicrowaveFit and microwave shopping.

Getting Started

How do I measure my cabinet space?

Use a measuring tape to find the interior dimensions of your space:

  • Width: The left-to-right distance inside your cabinet or on your counter
  • Height: From the shelf/counter surface up to the next shelf or cabinet above
  • Depth: From the front of the cabinet to the back wall

💡 Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch for accuracy. We support fractional input (e.g., 18 5/8").

What are manufacturer clearances?

Manufacturer clearances are the minimum distances a microwave needs around it for safe operation:

  • Top: 3–6 inches above the unit (for heat venting)
  • Sides: 3 inches on each side (for air circulation)
  • Back: 1–2 inches (for exhaust venting)

Without these clearances, microwaves overheat and can fail. Warranties may be voided if installation doesn't follow clearance specs.

Data & Accuracy

How accurate are the dimensions?

We distinguish between two types:

✓ Verified Dimensions

Checked against retail listings (Best Buy, Amazon). Very reliable.

⚠ Approximate Dimensions

From older catalogs or third-party data. Useful for browsing, but verify before buying.

When in doubt, measure the actual unit before final purchase.

Why do the dimensions differ from what the retailer lists?

Different retailers sometimes list dimensions inconsistently (interior vs. exterior, with/without feet, etc.). We try to standardize to exterior dimensions with feet. When there's doubt, we list what the manufacturer specifies.

Always verify dimensions with the retailer before purchasing.

Where do you get your data?

We combine data from:

  • California Energy Commission (CEC) appliance database
  • Amazon product listings and specs
  • Best Buy product pages
  • Manufacturer specification sheets

Microwave Types

What's the difference between types?
Countertop
Sits on your counter. Most affordable. Easiest to install.
Over-the-Range (OTR)
Mounts above your stove. Replaces range hood. Saves counter space. Requires existing range and above-stove clearance.
Built-in
Installs flush in cabinetry. Most expensive. Sleek look. Requires cabinet cutout.
Drawer
Pulls out like a drawer. Ergonomic. Premium pricing. Requires dedicated space below counter.
What's a zero-clearance hinge?

A zero-clearance hinge allows the microwave door to swing fully open (90°) without hitting the wall or adjacent cabinetry. Essential if you're mounting the microwave against a side wall.

What does "trim kit compatible" mean?

A trim kit frames the microwave to match cabinetry, giving a built-in appearance. Some countertop and OTR models accept trim kits (sold separately). Check the model page to see if it's compatible.

Shopping & Buying

How do the price check buttons work?

Each model has "Check" buttons for Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. These take you to search results or product pages so you can compare prices and availability.

💡 Prices vary between retailers. Check multiple sources before buying.

What does "Most Available" mean?

Models sold at multiple retailers (Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy) are more likely to be in stock and popular. "Most Available" sorts by this, surfacing units you can actually buy right now.

Do you make money from the links?
