Over-the-Range Microwaves

An over-the-range microwave mounts directly above your cooktop, doubling as a range hood with a built-in exhaust fan. It frees up counter space and gives the kitchen a cleaner look. Installation is more involved than countertop — you need the right wall width (almost always 30"), the correct clearance above the cooktop, and existing electrical. • ✓ The standard OTR width is 30" — this fits the vast majority of US kitchen stove openings. Measure yours before assuming.
• ✓ Most OTR models require 13–18" of clearance between the cooktop surface and the bottom of the microwave — check your manufacturer's minimum.
• ✓ Venting: recirculating (no ductwork) is easier to install but less effective; exterior venting requires a duct to outside.
• ✓ CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures exhaust power — 300 CFM is adequate for most cooking; 400+ CFM is better for heavy-use kitchens.
